Despite the damage in Pocklington, there were no civilian injuries although one schoolboy was rescued from a bomb shelter |
Robert was born on 5 March 1916 at Victoria Corner, Carleton Co. New Brunswick. His father was a farmer, born in Ashland, New Brunswick and his mother was born in Victoria. He had brothers Aubrey, Harry and Frank and three married sisters, Pearl, Kathleen and Doris. Another brother John had died earlier. He attended Victoria Corner School 1922-1929 and Hartland High 1929-1933. He attained High School Entrance and Junior Matric Grade X1. Robert was also in the High School Cadets. The sports he was involved with were hockey baseball, softball, skiing and swimming, and his hobby was fishing. Between 1934-1937 Robert worked as a Harness and Shoe Repair apprentice for L.E. Cox of Woodstock, and later started up his own business. |
Robert enlisted on 13 September 1940 and after earlier training, embarked from Canada for the U.K. on 15 August 1941. After arrival at 3 PRC on 15 September 1941, he went on to 19 OTU 14 October 1941, 585 Sqn 16 January 1942, 1652 CU 7 April 1942 and finally 405 Squadron 15 May 1942. |
